The artworks of Joan Barbarà dialogue with Miró, Dalí, Tàpies and Picasso at the Goya Museum in Castres

The exhibition ‘Soleils en Catalogne’ will be held at the Goya Museum in Castres from 30 June to 29 October. Three meetings will complete the exhibition of the Catalan artist at the beginning of the school year, including a dialogue between the publisher and son of the artist, Tristan Barbarà, and Jean-Louis Augé, curator-in-chief of the museums of Castres. Jean-Louis Augé will also offer a lecture on Raymond Llulle entitled “An Anthology of Western Thought”. Eliseu Trenc, art historian and professor emeritus of the University of Reims, will close this cycle of discussions and conferences by addressing the theme “Joan Barbarà and the Graphic Arts of the Modernist Era in Catalonia”.

Joan Barbarà (Barcelona, 1927-2013) was an active Catalan engraver and painter during the second half of the 20th century. In 1957, the artist moved to Paris to continue his artistic activity as an engraver after a first solo exhibition in Barcelona. It was in Paris where he founded with Lluís Braons the Atelier de Recherches Plastiques et Techniques Calcographiques. Thus Barbarà began his collaboration as an engraver with artists such as Matisse, Picasso or Miró. In 1966, the artist returned to Barcelona, where he founded his own studio and worked until the end of his days. He collaborated especially with Aimé Maeght.

His son, publisher Tristan Barbarà, is the curator of an exhibition at the Goya Museum (also known as Hispanic Art Museum) this summer. The exhibition revisits the artist’s plastic work – painting and engraving fundamentally – in dialogue with certain works on paper by Miró, Tàpies, Picasso and Dalí that had been produced in his studio. Among the exhibits are the great Mediterranean landscapes of Barbarà, the Gaudí series by Miró or the book Lulle-Tàpies, where the latter pays homage through his engravings to the Catalan thinker and writer.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, June 29 at 6:30 pm.
Exhibition from 30 June to 29 October 2017.
